So last week I show you about one of my favorite weekend escape destination, Nusa Lembongan, today let me escort you to another weekend escape destination in Lombok. Here we go Travel Guide Gili Islands, Lombok (The Gili’s).
The Gili’s consist of three petites islands in the north-west of Lombok called Gili Air, Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan.
1. Getting Here
The challenge to reach these islands is that you will need to spend couple of hours on the trip. From Lombok airport, take a DAMRI bus direction to Senggigi and then from Senggigi you can take a public car direction to Bangsal Harbor (Pelabuhan Bangsal). From Bangsal you can find local official boat heading to Gili Air, Gili Meno or Gili Trawangan, depends on your preference. This boat ticket is starting from IDR 12,000 one way.
If you are coming from Bali, there are many fast boat companies serving the transfer from Benoa harbor (Bali) to Gili Trawangan with the trip duration of 2 hours.
2. Getting Around and Attractions
Island hopping way is the most common practice to explore these islands. Each island has its own boat route to another islands.
This island is the closest island to the main island, Lombok. Twenty minutes by boat, you will be offered with a serene turquoise water. There are some nice resorts to stay for you who prefer a calm and quite ambient rather than a party area.
Like many other little islands in Indonesia, it has various choice of water sport activities such as snorkelling, diving, kayaking, padding and even kite surfing.
Renting a bike to explore the island is a good idea as you can enjoy the scenery of the other islands in every shore of this island.
Gili meno is the most tranquil island among the gilis. The island of romanticism and relaxation with the equivalent fascinating turquoise beach. This is a honeymoon destination but also welcome those who want an escape from the busy life.
Turtle sanctuary is one of the attraction that you can put on your to-do-list after slacking around on the beach.
Being in Gili Trawangan reminds me of being in Kuta beach, Bali. This is the most vibrant island with plenty choices of a cheap accommodation, makes it a backpacker’s favorite destination.
Water sport, food street, party, massage, restaurants, all in one compact in this island. The beaches are always crowded with the visitors laying to get tanned, swimming and playing around.
Getting to the gilis from Bangsal harbor is indeed the cheapest way yet may introduce some inconvenient. Beware of the people who will scam you by offering a transfer by their boat with a super expensive or even a super cheap fare that will persuade you to just deal with them. Both local and foreigner are their target. The safest way is to purchase the ticket in the official ticket office of the harbor.
