Basically you don’t have to be a millionaire to have a nice decent holiday in Indonesia even more if you are coming from the country with the higher currency than Rupiah. Typical budget for your trip in Indonesia can be minimized if you are willing to do a local way, that means you will eat local, you will take public transport (but well, even taxi rate is not so expensive compare to Rome) and if luxury hotel is not your preference.
So as I mentioned on Why Indonesia, nasi goreng is a must-try food with the price’s range in Jakarta of IDR 17,000 to IDR 20,000 (USD 1.3 – USD 1.5), there are many other local cuisines with similar budget. You can consider that food in Jakarta, as it is the capital city, is more expensive than in other cities. Food price range at street seller is around IDR 8,000 to IDR 20,000 and the drink price is ranged from IDR 0 to IDR 8,000 (its commonly free if you ask for sugar free tea or just water, not mineral water). You are safe to have a budget for food IDR 50,000 per day if you are okay to eat at the street sellers. It could be even cheaper if you are able to cook.
But its understandable if you could get bored to eat all the time at the street sellers, small local restaurant will not rock your wallet that much. In general the food will cost you IDR 20,000 to IDR 40,000 with drink start from IDR 2,000 to IDR 15,000. Here I show you a photos of the cuisine and menu with the price at small local restaurant.
Fast food restaurant like Mc Donalds, Burger Kings and others start from IDR 30,000 to IDR 60,000 and there are also plenty of choice for a nice restaurants serving Western, Indian, Chinese, Japanese and local food that cost more expensive as minimum IDR 100,000 per meal.
For moderate budget I would suggest to put IDR 60,000 per day
One bed in dorm start from IDR 75,000 and a private single room start from IDR 100,000. Double room can start as low as IDR 120,000.
Airbnb could be an option if you want to stay in an apartment with kitchen that will enable you to cook, studio or one bedroom apartment price starting from IDR 250,000.
As everywhere in the world, the location will define the price.
Typically one hour flight costs IDR 400,000 on weekday and will raise to IDR 600,000 on weekend. Try to avoid travelling in Feast period (Feast Idul Fitri and Christmas) as the price will double.
Bus and train could be an option. Twelve hours trip in economy class train cost like IDR 150,000; business class IDR 250,000 and executive class start from IDR 350,000. If you are in Jakarta and want to commute in nearby district, there are some lines of commuter train and cost only IDR 3,000 for the first 25 km. Taxy is not so expensive but personally I prefer to use application-based transportation like Uber, Grab or Gojek. Uber charges based on the distance (IDR 2,000/km) and time (IDR 200/min).
The price for renting car starts from IDR 200,000/day while motorbike starts from IDR 50,000/day.
Local bus (inside city) price starts from IDR 3,500 and overnight bus will start from IDR 120,000.
Ferry boat starts from IDR 6,000 for 45 minutes crossing.
If you are not indonesian or not in possession of KITAS, you might have to pay a different price to enter some local attractions. For example in Borobudur, the price for local and KITAS holder is only IDR 30,000 (USD 2.2) but for foreigners, it costs USD 20.
Most of the beach is free entry, watersports start from IDR 50,000 and the price for hiking activity starts from IDR 400,000.
I warn you that alcohol is quite expensive in Indonesia. But well, we have a local beer called Bintang that costs around IDR 35,000 in normal store and will raise up to IDR 60,000 in the club or bar. For a decent club, the entrance fee starts from IDR 150,000 but some of them will give a free entrance for ladies with entry before midnight.
